$20 Above: Delille Chaleur Estate Blanc 2011

Delille Chaleur Estate Blanc 2011

By Shawn Luke

Delille has been making great wines in Washington since 1992.  When I visited the tasting room in Woodinville back in May 2012, I finally was able to taste the exceptional quality across both the Delille and Doyenne lineups.   Joining their wine club was a no-brainer.  Most wines I consume are reds, but in a recent club shipment, Delille sent me a bottle of their 2011 Chaleur Estate Blanc, which was created with a traditional Bordeaux blend of 62% Sauvignon Blanc and 38% Semillon.  The grapes come from some of the very best vineyards in Washington.  The composition includes 24% Boushey Sauvignon Blanc – Yakima Valley AVA, 21% Klipsun Sauvignon Blanc – Red Mountain AVA, 17% Sagemoor Sauvignon Blanc – Columbia Valley AVA, 29% Boushey Semilllon – Yakima Valley AVA and 9% Klipsun Semillon – Red Mountain AVA.

The wine primarily displays a pale and pastel yellow color but some brighter yellow hints do sneak in depending on the light.  The initial aromas are layers of stone fruits with yellow peaches, some white peaches, and apricots.  Then a slightly more-prominent almond brown emerges.   This doesn’t quite get to the citrus fruits but stays on the bright and fresh side of those stone fruits.  A slightly brown wood influence adds richness to the nose.  Delivers a nice medium mouthfeel with a texture that nudges up to oily but then the acidity provides lift that balances it out.  More almond and brown notes mix with the returning bright peaches, with some pear and a little apricot blending in.  There’s a nice smooth transition to the finish delivered by the polished texture.  The finish is quite lengthy with acid-driven stone fruits, then more almond notes and a clean barrel nuance.  The acids lean it up to lemon for a second but then it returns to the stone fruits.  The finish extends for 30-45 seconds, fading gently.  This is very nicely done, showing a deft touch with the oak and the lees along with preservation of the acidity.  The elegance and lengthy finish earn it extra points.  93 – 13.1% alcohol. Suggested retail is $35.  Tasted on May 5, 2013.

$20 Below: Franciscan Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Franciscan Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Date Tasted: 3/20/13

Price: Suggested Retail is $16.99

From The Winery: 13% alcohol. Napa Valley AVA. 6,970 cases produced.

Impressions/Notes: Franciscan’s 2011 Sauvignon Blanc falls on the fruiter side of the Sauvignon Blanc spectrum. The wine presents with a light straw color. There’s a bit of sliced bell pepper on the nose, but lanolin and orange zest provide the primary aromas. It’s easy-drinking and mellow–domesticated for a Sauvignon Blanc–with moderate acidity. Retailing at $16.99, this is one of my favorite Napa budget wines.

Trione Vineyards & Winery

The Trione family has been farming and selling grapes in Sonoma County for over forty years. They now own and farm over 650 vineyard acres in the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, and Sonoma Coast. In 2005, the family built Trione Vineyards & Winery near Geyserville, California. Winemaker Scot Covington uses three percent of Trione’s Estate grapes to produce their wines. Production is currently around 6,000 cases.

After tasting six of Trione’s current releases, the overarching themes that I continuously noted were consistently good quality and balance. I did not detect a trace of heat in any of these wines.

Trione Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Date Tasted: 3/9/13

Price: $23.00

From The Winery: 14% Alcohol. River Road Ranch Vineyard, Russian River Valley AVA.

Impressions/Notes: This lively and zestful wine presents with a very pale straw color. The nose is chock-full of wild grasses and sliced jalapeños, but the flavors lean more towards fresh citrus fruits, specifically lemon and tangerine. Refreshing, balanced, and overall a nice expression of Sauvignon Blanc.

Trione Chardonnay 2008

Date Tasted: 3/9/13

Price: $30.00

From The Winery: 14.3% Alcohol. River Road Ranch Vineyard, Russian River Valley AVA.

Impressions/Notes: Light gold in color, this Chardonnay features expressive aromas of honey melon, oak, spice, and lemon candy. A shade low on acidity, with a clinging aftertaste of toasted oak.

Rating: Recommended (87), 2.5/5 Value

Trione Pinot Noir 2008

Date Tasted: 2/7/13

Price: $35.00

From The Winery: 14.2% Alcohol. River Road Ranch Vineyard, Russian River Valley AVA.

Impressions/Notes: This garnet colored Pinot Noir is aromatic and has an airy, elegant presence. Fragrant red cherry, mulch, and dark chocolate aromas and flavors really pop, while the light and silky mouthfeel and impeccable balance take this wine to the next level. My favorite wine of the group and priced well at $35.00.

Rating: Highly Recommended (90), 3.5/5 Value

Trione Syrah 2008

Date Tasted: 2/7/13

Price: $32.00

From The Winery: 14.8% Alcohol. River Road Ranch Vineyard, Russian River Valley AVA.

Impressions/Notes: A very clean, balanced Syrah that provides an excellent expression of herbs and spices–particularly oregano, bay leaf, and mint. Black raspberry and menthol are also readily apparent on the nose and mouth. The fruit is a bit on the tart side (I’m ok with that), and there is a slight bitterness on the palate, followed by very fine tannins.

Rating: Recommended (88), 3/5 Value

Trione Cabernet Sauvignon Block Twenty One 2007

Date Tasted: 3/9/13

Price: $64.00

From The Winery: 14.5% Alcohol. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 2.5% Petit Verdot, 2.5% Malbec. Cloverdale Ranch Vineyard, Alexander Valley AVA.

Impressions/Notes: Dark in color, this Zinfandel like-Cab presents with one of the loudest noses that I’ve come across. It’s absolutely loaded with raisiny fruit, cassis, and chocolate. There’s some sweetness on the palate, huge fruit, and sweet spices. Given the “huge fruit” and sweetness, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there’s enough acid to balance it out.

Rating: Recommended (88), 2/5 Value

Trione Red Wine 2007

Date Tasted: 3/9/13

Price: $48.00

From The Winery: 14.5% Alcohol. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (blend breakdown unknown). Alexander Valley AVA.

Impressions/Notes: The “Red Wine” blend may be more subdued that the Cabernet Sauvignon, but it’s still a big wine. I found the aroma/flavor profile to be a bit more complex, with blackberry, molasses, pencil shavings, red bell pepper, and damp earth. Black fruits, spice, and supple tannins fill the palate.

Rating: Recommended (89), 2.5/5 Value

$20 Below: Wines From Long Shadows Wineries, L’Ecole No. 41, Woodward Canyon Winery

Several of the Walla Walla wineries that we visited had at least one bottling that retailed for under $20.00. White wines were more commonly found in this price range, although there were a few reds that were very good. One particular varietal that really shined in this price range was Riesling. The following $20 Below wines really stood out on Tasting Day 1:

Woodward Canyon's Reserve House

Long Shadows Wineries Poet’s Leap Riesling 2011

Price: Suggested retail is $20.00

From The Winery: 12.3% alcohol, 1.3 g/100 ml residual sugar, 100% Riesling, Columbia Valley

Date Tasted: 5/30/12

Impressions/Notes: A wine with zing. Melon, honeysuckle, and pine aromas on the nose. A bit of sweetness balanced nicely against the firm acidity. A real pleaser!

Score: 20/20

L’Ecole No. 41 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc Klipsun Vineyard-Red Mountain 2010

Price: Suggested retail is $19.00

From The Winery: 67% Semillon/33% Sauvignon Blanc, 75 cases produced

Date Tasted: 5/30/12

Impressions/Notes: Fruity and crisp, with pineapple, grapefruit, and fresh hay aromas. Certainly had more of a body to it than the Sauvignon Blanc dominated Sauv. Blanc/Semillon blends I’ve recently tasted.

Score: 19/20

Woodward Canyon Winery Non-Vintage Riesling

Price: Suggested retail is $19.00

From The Winery: 100% Riesling

Date Tasted: 5/30/12

Impressions/Notes: Interesting aromas of limestone and ripe pineapple. Nicely balanced, with a refreshing burst of acidity on the palate.

Score: 18.5/20

$20 Below: Dry Creek Vineyards Fume Blanc 2010

Dry Creek Fume Blanc, Sonoma County, 2010

Price: Suggested retail is $12.00 (Purchased for $9.99)

From The Winery: 13.5% alcohol, 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Impressions: Pale, straw-colored, with fresh lime and sliced green pepper intermingling on the nose amongst dry grass and a faint whiff of cumin in the background. Nice weight in the mouth–it had the feel of an oak-aged sauvignon blanc without the oak aromas/flavors–but in actuality it’s oak-free. Interesting, pleasant, well-priced, and sure to accompany a wide range of dishes.

Score: 18/20
